Guangzhou - Saturday 16th July

We arrived on time at 0830 into a warm, wet, concrete jungle of a city. Chun was right, Guangzhou is not the most eye-pleasing of places. What a stark contrast to the natural beauty of Yangshuo.

The rain did not provide any motivation to get going quickly so it was a good chance to refresh ourselves and have a late breakfast at Bruce Lees, a Chinese fast food chain serving all kinds of bones with little or no meat and rice or noodles.

This was followed by a stroll around the local shopping district. Saw some interesting iPad copies running either Android or Windows but at £250 for the latter it was hardly worth buying it. Definitely nowhere near the amount of innovative technology products that I had expected to see.

Eva found a very good shop selling all manner of Chinese teas, Black, Green, Red, Ginseng, Jasmine, Oolong, etc. Kelly at the Cheng Nan Tea Shop (153 South Road) was very informative and helpful. After sampling several teas we bought an amazing Ginseng tea that had an unusual and pleasant sweet aftertaste that started at the back of the mouth and oozed forwards to the tip of the tongue.
That night we had a farewell meal with Leon. Well it was more like a small banquet topped off with a whole fish cooked in a delicious sauce as the centrepiece. Leon has been great all the way through this trip. He has been there to help when needed but happy to leave us to our own exploration most of the time.

After dinner we took a taxi to the Pearl River and saw the lights of the buildings and changing colours of the bridges. We had to bail out of the first taxi as the driver couldn't even read a map and we only wanted to go a mile down a straight road!

When we got there the lights were pretty but the river was full of large clumps of vegetation flowing really quickly downstream. We thought that with all of the rain and lightning around that this could be getting washed down from the hills. (On returning to the UK we found out, via Twitter, that this was an infestation of Water Hyacynth affecting the whole region).

We had a couple of night caps at a nice bar called Stage and headed back for our last nights sleep in China.
